The Power of Asking Questions: Building Connection and Trust as a Deliberate Leader

The Power of Asking Questions: Building Connection and Trust as a Deliberate Leader

As a leader, one of the biggest myths is that you need to have all the answers. Great leadership isn’t about knowing everything – it’s about creating an environment where your team can explore, find solutions, and develop their skills and expertise. By asking the right questions, you can foster trust, confidence, and engagement within your team.

Why Asking Questions is Crucial

Asking open-ended, exploratory questions creates space for discussion and allows team members to share their perspectives. If you believe that as a leader, you must have all the answers, asking more questions than providing answers may feel uncomfortable initially. It can leave you feeling vulnerable and questioning your value. However, flipping this belief is essential for increasing your leadership effectiveness.

Through asking questions, leaders can clarify, seek genuine understanding, elicit information, and gain a clearer picture of the facts. It takes more vulnerability to ask questions than to answer them when you’re the leader, but this vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness.

Avoid Micromanagement Questions

Questions that reek of micromanagement are not the type that build connection and trust. We’ve all encountered those patronizing questions:

🚀 “What have you missed here?”

🚀 “When will that overdue task be delivered?”

🚀 “I can spot what’s gone wrong, can you?”

Instead, focus on big questions that promote exploration, insight, and curiosity. These types of questions invite genuine collaboration with your team.

Examples of Effective Questions

🚀 “What do you think?”

🚀 “What else could be important here?”

🚀 “How can I help? What do you need from me?”

🚀 “What is the real challenge here for you?”

🚀 “What do you recommend would be the right way to progress?”

🚀 “What is the most important first step you can take?”

🚀 “How can we make this conversation most useful to you?”

Your Role as a Leader

As a leader, your primary role is to lead your team in delivering on the vision, strategy, and goals for your organization. Your role is about observing behavior and being tuned in to what might be getting in the way of achieving these goals, and helping remove barriers and blockages.

You won’t always know what is causing these impediments. However, through asking more questions, you and your team can work through issues together. By creating an environment where questions are encouraged and valued, you’ll build trust, foster collaboration, and empower your team to find solutions and grow their skills.
