Increasing Accountability in Decision-Making: A Guide for Deliberate Leaders

Increasing Accountability in Decision-Making: A Guide for Deliberate Leaders

In our fast-paced, interconnected work environments,
trust serves as the foundation upon which strong, successful relationships are built. For deliberate leaders – whether at the executive level, in middle management, or on the front lines – trust is more than just a word. It’s an unspoken assurance that enables open, productive, and impactful interactions. But what does trust look like in action, and how can we, as leaders, build and sustain it with intention?

Today, we’re exploring the T.R.U.S.T. model for cultivating trust in a deliberate leadership context. This model is designed to encourage reflection on how you approach relationship-building, inviting you to think deeply about the actions and behaviors that help cultivate a lasting sense of trust with your teams, colleagues and stakeholders.

T.R.U.S.T.:

Time – Invest the Time

Trust isn’t instantaneous; it grows through consistent, meaningful engagement. Deliberate leaders create time to build trust intentionally, recognizing that trust is cumulative and requires ongoing presence. Consider: Are you taking the time to engage consistently, even when immediate needs aren’t pressing? Ask yourself: How can I ensure that I’m investing enough time to foster trust, allowing it to pave the way for open dialogue and co-creation?

Rapport – Get to Know Each Other

Building rapport requires going beyond surface-level interactions. It’s about establishing a personal connection that strengthens your understanding of what truly matters to those you lead or collaborate with. Regular, informal check-ins offer opportunities to discuss goals, motivations, and challenges. Reflect: Do I seize every opportunity to learn more about the people I work with, understanding what drives and inspires them? Challenge yourself: How much of myself am I sharing, inviting them to trust and know me in return?

Understand – Walk in Their Shoes

Empathy is central to deliberate leadership. Taking the time to truly understand another’s perspective allows leaders to offer tailored, meaningful guidance and support. Empathy mapping, perspective-taking, or simply making a habit of “walking in their shoes” can deepen this understanding. Question: Am I actively seeking to understand my team members’ or colleagues’ concerns, challenges, and motivations? Consider: How might my approach shift if I regularly took time to see things from their viewpoint?

Sensemaking – Context and Environment

Good advice is about more than just knowledge – it’s about ensuring it fits the context and environment of those you support. Sensemaking is the practice of observing, listening, and interpreting their environment, helping you tailor your guidance effectively. Think: Am I tuned into the unique needs and dynamics of my team’s world, interpreting their challenges accurately? Evaluate: Do I connect the dots between their context and my guidance, demonstrating a clear, relevant understanding of their circumstances?

Tactical – Demonstrate the Value

Demonstrating value isn’t just about completing tasks; it’s about proactively finding ways to support and elevate others. Deliberate leaders seize opportunities to “delight” by providing impactful support that goes beyond expectations, showing genuine care and a commitment to excellence. Challenge yourself: How can I surprise and add value in ways my team or colleagues didn’t even anticipate? Reflect: Am I using my expertise to make a meaningful difference, reinforcing trust through purposeful action?

Takeaways for Reflection

The T.R.U.S.T. model encourages leaders to be intentional and mindful in their approach to building trust. Trust doesn’t remain static; it requires consistent nurturing and deliberate action. Each of us can consider: How am I embodying these principles today, and where might I strengthen my focus tomorrow?

Trust is essential, yet delicate. As deliberate leaders, let’s prioritize these five principles, creating relationships and partnerships that are resilient, collaborative, and poised for success.
