Become Laser-Focused on What Matters Most

Become Laser-Focused on What Matters Most

How often do you pick up your phone with one task in mind, only to be sidetracked by a flurry of notifications?

Whether it’s a WhatsApp message, an Instagram DM, or a LinkedIn request, distractions are everywhere. Leaders frequently share with me how these interruptions derail their workdays, impacting productivity and effectiveness. And I feel it too. Studies show that leaders experience distractions roughly every 11 minutes during the workday. No wonder we’re overwhelmed!

Think about it: this equates to 56 interruptions per day for many leaders. The cost? It takes about 25 minutes to regain full focus after each interruption, leading to almost 700 hours lost annually

These interruptions aren’t just external. We often impose them on ourselves through multitasking, responding impulsively to notifications, or trying to tackle an endless to-do list. This self-imposed chaos dilutes our focus, making it harder to prioritise what truly matters.

So rather than being prone to distraction here are three practical ways you can better focus your energy so you can get sh$t done!

  1. Identify Your Priorities
    • Pinpoint the critical tasks that need your attention.
    • Break these tasks down into smaller, achievable goals.
    • Delegate what you can to free up time and mental space.
    • Communicate these priorities to your team to create shared focus and vision.
  1. Practice Mindfulness and Stress Management
    • Get enough sleep – it’s often overlooked but crucial.
    • Integrate mindfulness practices like meditation or deep breathing, even for just 20 seconds.
    • Commit to daily exercise – even a short walk can work wonders for focus and energy.
  1. Minimise Distractions
    • Time-block every hour of your workday to stay aligned with your priorities.
    • Turn off notifications – your emails and messages will still be there when you check.
    • Schedule specific times for admin and research to avoid procrastination traps.

Focusing your energy deliberately is essential for identifying and completing what’s truly important. Merely thinking about it won’t cut it. Your energy is your most valuable resource—manage it with intention, and you’ll cultivate a leadership style that’s both impactful and deliberate.
